It doesn't matter whether you are charismatic or not, as long as you use the Holy Bible containing the Old and new testaments in your church, then you can find out about the gift of tongues in that bible and you shouldn't let any preacher deceive you, guard your heart diligently against false teachings and heresies.
Many people thinks that speaking in other tongues is speaking jargons but it is not.
However, there are differences between "speaking in an unknown tongue(1st Cor. 14:2, 4) " and "divers kinds of tongues(1st Cor. 10:12) " but I'm not gonna go into that area for now, let me just focus on the topic titled "The different kinds of tongues".
Here, i'll be showing you the different kinds of tongues, speaking in tongues is a great mystery but i'll be sharing with you some interesting things that I learnt in the bible.
Self edifying tongues
He that speaketh in an unknown tongue edifieth himself...... 1 Corinthians 14: 4a.
The word "Edify" is gotten from a Latin word "aedificare" which means to build up yourself.
This type is the most common tongue, it is mainly used for building up your Spiritual being. If you so much desire Spiritual growth, then you need to speak in tongues frequently. It's still a pity that many Christians don't even know what spiritual growth is, I would have talk about it here but that's gonna be another topic.
Only God understands the meaning of this type of tongue(1st Cor. 14:2) , but this tongue will open your Spiritual eyes to see Spiritual things including vision. When you speak this type of tongue to a level, the first thing you begin to hear is God speaking to you, then visions, then seeing the spiritual things. Although Spiritual growth is not about seeing and hearing things beyond the natural but in some cases, it's part of it.

Then we have the tongues of other languages(divers kinds of tongues)
This kind of tongue is one of the gifts of the Spirit(1st Cor. 12:10) and it can come in worldly language or heavenly language, I hope you know that the languages we speak here on earth is different from the one spoken in heaven. Paul talked about the tongues of angels in 1st Cor. 13:1. I've listened to people speaking the tongues of angels and it is very much different from self edifying tongues, it's like speaking Portuguese or a language even the alphabets used are different and you will begin to wonder how they could manage to say those words.
Now concerning the worldly language, this kind of tongue can help you to speak any language in this world fluently without learning it, BUT it is occasional.
It is used as a sign to unbelievers and to create convictions among them (1st Cor. 14:22) .
I've heard the story of a missionary that traveled to a village in China but those people don't understand English, then the Spirit of God took over that missionary and he began to preach to those people in Chinese.
That's how this type of tongue works, I'm sure that those Chinese folks will be amazed and their convictions will be strengthened, but note that you can only speak this kind of tongues for a purpose and not for showoff.
This is the kind of tongue that the early disciples spoke in Acts 2:5-11, Acts 2:6.
Prophetic tongues
I couldn't really find a suitable name for this kind of tongue. This tongue is also occasional, it is the kind of tongue that requires interpretation mostly. Although other tongues can also be interpreted, but this particular tongue is useless without interpretation.
In the Scriptures, it is written: "by means of people speaking strange languages I will speak to my people, says the Lord......... " - 1st Corinthians 14:21a
God speaks through this kind of tongue, prophecies are released through this kind of tongue. Let me tell you how this tongue works by sharing some of my experiences:
There was a day I was speaking in tongues, then suddenly my tongues changed and an inspiration came to me that enable me to understand what I was saying. I will speak in tongues for few seconds, then I will stop and speak in words. Like a five seconds tongues, then I'll say "Here is what the Lord is saying, I am raising a mighty host of army............... " I remembered that I ended with "I, the Lord has spoken".
Words of knowledge and words of wisdom can also be spoken through this tongue.
This kind of tongue also create convictions.
These are the three tongues I've learnt of so far through my experiences and through the word of God(The Bible).
